They decided to turn their living room into a bed and breakfast, complete with air mattresses and homemade breakfast. The idea was a hit, and the two friends decided to start a company based on the concept of renting out spare rooms to travelers.

 They partnered with Nathan Blecharczyk, a software engineer, and launched Airbnb in 2008, initially targeting attendees of the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver. The company’s first booking was for a shared room in a loft apartment in San Francisco. From there, Airbnb slowly grew and expanded to new cities, attracting a loyal following of budget-conscious travelers looking for an alternative to traditional hotels.

 

Growth and Expansion

 In the years following its launch, Airbnb continued to expand rapidly, attracting investors and acquiring smaller startups along the way. By 2011, the platform had facilitated over one million bookings, and it had listings in over 13,000 cities worldwide. In 2012, the company launched its mobile app, which allowed travelers to book accommodations on the go.

 In 2014, Airbnb raised $450 million in funding, valuing the company at $10 billion. The platform had over 10 million registered users and over 500,000 listings worldwide. The company continued to expand its services, offering experiences and activities in addition to lodging.

By 2017, Airbnb had over three million listings in more than 191 countries, making it the largest lodging provider in the world. The platform had also expanded its offerings to include luxury rentals, unique stays, and Airbnb Plus, a program that features verified, high-quality listings.
